Tips for GATE exam

Dear GATE aspirants,

“Competition” now a day’s has become an important entity in the development of human race. Inorder to win a competition, we basically approach others or our own who are experienced enough to provide us advice, suggestions, tips and clues. We take that and move forward to compete with others. But what if others who are competing with you get the same advice or tips from same person as you did? Then what is chance of winning the competition?

When i was preparing for GATE, I rejected the advice of everyone and started to design my own. It’s because same cap won’t fit every bottle. Many people make pizza, but each of their recipes tastes different, because each has their own affinity towards a particular flavour. Similar while preparing for GATE, we have a unique technique that works perfect for us to crack this exam.
So, now i am jotting down the tips for cracking the GATE, but try to design your own in future.

1) Many people told me that preparing for GATE; you need just 5-6 months time. But i took nearly a year to prepare, because i had no basic knowledge in any of the subject. So, i suggest you ignore this short time preparation and try to move forward for long time preparation.

Detail Explanation: Decide in second or third year of your undergraduate  that you are going to appear for GATE. Start getting yourself strong in all the basics. And try to use your professor or lecturers for clearing your doubts. Utilize the college library very well, so that you can avoid spending money in buying books.

2) Getting a high percentile is not a tough job; all you need to do is to get most of the answers correct and for that you need to know the question very well.

Detail Explanation: In order to understand the question and tick or write the correction answer, you need to think like the person who prepared the question paper. For that, you have to prepare your own questions and options for it. Read a topic everyday and try to prepare questions based on the GATE model. This will provide an opportunity to remember the topic forever.

4) Have your own recipe and try to avoid others. i.e. Try to design your own strategy for preparation and imply it.

Detail Explanation: I had a unique strategy i.e. I will call my friends for group study and during that period we will prepare our own MCQs and exchange it with each other. So, we have experience in preparing question as well as answering it. So try to have your methods or strategy to crack GATE.

5) GATE syllabus provided by IITs is not so vast. It is a tool to prevent diversion and time consumption. Read the syllabus and follow it.

Detail Explanation: Science is a vast field and we learn just a tip bit of it. For GATE preparation, it is necessary that you avoid all unnecessary subjects like for example learning Enzyme technology or Food technology in detail. Focus on the topics given in the GATE syllabus.

6) Collect only necessary books related to the subject.  You can use Indian author or foreign author books, but foreign authors are much preferred.

Detail Explanation: Try to read the topics from specific books, books that you feel that you can easily understand. Foreign authors may be difficult to read because it is so elaborate, but it will help you in answering any questions been put forward. Standard book been adviced by your professor will be a good thing to follow and consider that book as bible of that particular subject. Read the standard books thoroughly and perfectly. Never omit any information.

7) Never prepare for GATE alone. Have a group of friends who are preparing for GATE either in online or face to face.

Detail Explanation: This point will not suit for everyone, but it is the best option for people who prefer not to read the whole text book. A group study will avoid the time consumption taken to completely read and understand the whole book. Instead, you can just sit with your friends and discuss on the topics and also share your MCQs with them. I did my group study in Facebook by creating a group called GATEHELPLINE (Biotechnology)

8) Learn basics first and then go for any advanced topics. Always have the habit of making notes.

Detailed Explanation: Learning basics will lessen your effort in understanding the advanced topics. So, try to make notes of the basics and formulas. Have a small diary or note book, and start jotting down the important points from the basic textbooks. Keep it with you all the time and try to read, memorize it till you get satisfaction.

9) Practice as many MCQs as you can. Practice makes a man perfect.

Detailed explanation: Practicing maths all the time will make you to solve any problem even in your sleep or tension. Practicing the MCQs will make you an unbeatable competitive student. You can’t learn to drive a car by just reading a manual saying “How to drive a car?” If you want to learn to drive car, you should do it practically. Similarly, practising MCQs makes you an expert in solving any problems related to the subject.

10) How to score a 99% percentile in GATE?

Detailed Explanation: You should have determination and self motivation to crack this exam. Never think that you have not prepared enough for the exam. Whatever knowledge you have during the time of exam is more than enough and try to answer maximum with confidence and error less. “Avoid negative marking” – a common advice from everyone. Well I say avoid the fact that you don’t know anything about this particular question. You have learned everything from the syllabus and there is no chance of asking anything out of syllabus. So you know the subject, which means you know the question and if you understand the question, you either find the right answer or eliminate the wrong options inorder to find the right answer.
